The sensation of having a wild bird land on your hand is indescribable. Get ProPhotos for the money shot!
Imagine being surrounded by the serene beauty of a winter wonderland in Lake Tahoe, California, with snow-covered mountains towering above you and the crisp air filling your lungs. As you trudge through the snow on a snowshoe tour, you suddenly feel a gentle brush on your hand. You look down to see a bird perched on your glove, looking up at you with curious eyes. Moments later, another bird lands on your head, and you feel a sense of awe and wonder that words cannot describe. This is the incredible experience of having wild birds land on your hand and head during a Tahoe snowshoe tour.
During the winter months, the snow-capped peaks of Lake Tahoe become a haven for a variety of bird species, including the Gray Jay, Mountain Chickadee, and Clark’s Nutcracker. These birds are incredibly curious and unafraid of humans, often coming close to investigate anyone wandering through their territory. It is this behavior that has made them a popular attraction for nature enthusiasts visiting the region.
Recently, I had the opportunity to experience this firsthand while on a snowshoe tour in the Tahoe National Forest. My guide, an experienced naturalist and wildlife photographer, knew just where to find the birds and brought along some birdseed to attract them. As we made our way through the forest, he would whistle and call out to the birds, and they would come flying over to perch on our outstretched hands.
The sensation of having a wild bird land on your hand is indescribable. You feel the lightness of their weight as they settle in, and their tiny claws gently grip your skin. As they begin to peck at the birdseed, you can hear the crunching of their beaks and the rustle of their feathers. It is a truly magical experience, one that fills you with a sense of connection to the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.
But the experience doesn’t end there. My guide, an accomplished photographer, captured stunning photos of the birds perched on our hands and heads, their feathers fluffed up against the cold. The contrast between the vibrant colors of the birds and the snowy backdrop created a breathtaking image that I will cherish forever.
Having wild birds land on your hand and head during a Tahoe snowshoe tour is an experience like no other. It is a moment of pure wonder and connection to the natural world, and one that I will never forget. The stunning photos taken by my guide serve as a beautiful reminder of this incredible experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have witnessed such a remarkable display of nature’s beauty.

“If you’re going to do one thing, schedule a snowshoe tour through this company! My boyfriend and I had never been snowshoeing and I was nervous beforehand. Dave called us the evening prior to be sure we were well prepared as it had snowed a lot the day before. The instruction we were given made it so easy to find the meeting location. Dave had all the gear we needed and made it a very easy experience. The route we took was beautiful and gave us the best views. Dave is experienced and knowledgeable which is what made our experience so great. He knows the area but took us up at our pace which I was thankful for! We were so pleased with our experience and I am sure anyone that goes snowshoeing with this company will have a great time! Dave also takes FABULOUS photos which we love! I was breathing too heavy to document much but he sent us all the photos he took which were awesome. So thankful for this trip and the memories! Thanks, Dave!”
