As a city dweller, I had always yearned for a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and explore the beauty of nature. So when I heard about the New Moon Stargazing Tahoe Snowshoe Tour, I knew that this was the perfect opportunity for me to do just that. Little did I know, my first time snowshoeing would be a hilarious adventure filled with mishaps and laughter. As I set out on the tour, I was struck by the vastness of the night sky. It was like nothing I had ever seen before, with stars twinkling and constellations shining bright. The tour guide started pointing out the different constellations and planets that were visible that night, and I was completely enthralled.
“Look over there,” he said, “that’s Orion’s belt. And that bright star over there? That’s Sirius, the brightest star in the sky.”
I was so captivated by the stars that I barely noticed the snowshoes strapped to my feet. It wasn’t until we started walking that I realized just how challenging snowshoeing could be. My first step was a wobbly one, and I immediately lost my balance and fell into the snow. The guide and the rest of the group burst out laughing as I struggled to get back on my feet. But I was determined to not let this setback get the best of me, so I soldiered on.
As we made our way through the snow, the guide started pointing out different satellites and constellations. I was fascinated by the fact that we could see so many stars and planets with the naked eye. It was like being in a different world altogether. And then the guide suggested that we try some astrophotography. This was something I had never done before, but I was eager to give it a shot. He handed me his camera and showed me how to set it up to capture the stars. I took a few shots, but they all came out blurry and overexposed. It was frustrating, but I refused to give up. I was determined to get the perfect shot of the night sky.
As we continued our trek, the guide pointed out a shooting star streaking across the sky. It was a magical moment, and we all stood in silence watching it until it disappeared into the darkness.
We walked on, and I was starting to get the hang of snowshoeing. I was feeling more confident and even started to lead the group. But just when I thought I had this snowshoeing thing down, disaster struck. I stepped on what I thought was solid ground, but it turned out to be a patch of ice. My feet slipped out from under me, and I fell backwards into a snowbank. The guide rushed over to make sure I was okay, but I was too busy laughing at myself to answer him.
As we continued on, I started to get cold. Despite the fact that I was wearing layers upon layers of clothing, the chill had started to seep through. But just when I thought I couldn’t take it anymore, the guide announced that we had reached our destination: a clearing in the forest where we could stargaze to our hearts’ content. We all gathered around and lay down on our backs, looking up at the night sky. The stars were so bright that it was like looking at a blanket of glitter. The guide pointed out different constellations and even gave us a crash course in astronomy. As we lay there, I started to feel a sense of peace that I had never experienced before. It was like all the stress and worries of everyday life had melted away, and I was left with nothing but the beauty of the night sky.
But just when I thought the night couldn’t get any more magical, the guide suggested that we try some more astrophotography. This time, he gave me some tips on how to get the perfect shot. I adjusted the settings on the camera and waited for the perfect moment. And then, just as I was about to take the shot, a snowball came flying out of nowhere and hit me right in the face. I looked around to see who had thrown the snowball, but everyone was pretending like they had no idea what had just happened. I tried to wipe the snow off my face, but it was no use. I was covered in snow, and my camera had taken a direct hit. Despite the setback, I refused to give up. I wiped the snow off my camera and tried again. And this time, the shot came out perfectly. It was like all the stars had aligned to create the perfect moment.
As we started to make our way back, I was feeling more confident about my snowshoeing skills. I was leading the group again, feeling like a pro. And then, just when I thought I had everything under control, I stepped on a branch and fell face first into the snow. Everyone rushed over to make sure I was okay, but I was too busy laughing at myself to answer them. It was like the night was determined to make me look like a fool. But despite all the mishaps, I had an amazing time on my first snowshoeing trip. The beauty of the night sky, the laughter of my fellow snowshoers, and the thrill of trying something new all combined to make it an unforgettable experience.
As we said our goodbyes and headed back to civilization, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore the beauty of nature. And who knows? Maybe next time, I’ll be a little more graceful on those snowshoes. But probably not.

“If you’re going to do one thing, schedule a snowshoe tour through this company! My boyfriend and I had never been snowshoeing and I was nervous beforehand. Dave called us the evening prior to be sure we were well prepared as it had snowed a lot the day before. The instruction we were given made it so easy to find the meeting location. Dave had all the gear we needed and made it a very easy experience. The route we took was beautiful and gave us the best views. Dave is experienced and knowledgeable which is what made our experience so great. He knows the area but took us up at our pace which I was thankful for! We were so pleased with our experience and I am sure anyone that goes snowshoeing with this company will have a great time! Dave also takes FABULOUS photos which we love! I was breathing too heavy to document much but he sent us all the photos he took which were awesome. So thankful for this trip and the memories! Thanks, Dave!”
